Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the only U.S. president elected four times. He took office in March 1933 during the worst economic collapse in American history, and he died in office in April 1945, just months before the war ended. After he was gone, Congress was so spooked by 12 years of one man holding power that they passed the 22nd Amendment, limiting all future presidents to two terms. Few Americans knew during his lifetime that polio had paralyzed him from the waist down. Most photos show him seated or carefully posed at a podium. Aides quietly carried him when no one was looking.
