Here's the kicker: Jack Nicholson made that line up on the spot. Kubrick's script had something more generic, but Nicholson, a Johnny Carson fan, riffed the famous Tonight Show announcer's intro. Stephen King has hated the movie ever since. He thought Nicholson seemed too crazy from the very first scene, robbing Jack Torrance of his slow descent. The hedge maze didn't exist in the book either. Kubrick added it because the moving topiary animals from the novel were impossible to film convincingly in 1980. King eventually made his own TV version in 1997. Almost nobody remembers it.
