David O. Selznick spent two years searching for his Scarlett, screen-testing 1,400 actresses including Bette Davis, Lana Turner, and Joan Crawford. Vivien Leigh, a British unknown in Hollywood, showed up almost by accident, brought to watch the Atlanta-burning scene by her boyfriend Laurence Olivier. Selznick saw her face in the firelight and supposedly turned to his brother and said, 'I think we have our Scarlett.' The Tara facade was built on a California backlot, then dismantled and shipped to a Georgia farm for tourists to visit. Pieces of it still sit in that field today, slowly returning to the earth.
