Question 1 of 3
American History · 1950s
What was the name of the ship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1912?
Did You Know?
April 14, 1912, 11:40 PM, the lookout shouted 'Iceberg, right ahead.' He had spotted it just 37 seconds before impact. The ship was supposed to be unsinkable, with 16 watertight compartments that her builder believed could survive any collision. The iceberg sliced through six of them. The Titanic carried lifeboats for only half the people on board, because the deck would have looked 'too crowded' otherwise. Over 1,500 people went down with her into the freezing North Atlantic. Her wreck wasn't found until 1985, lying two miles down on the ocean floor, and even today, pieces of her continue to be raised.
