George Lucas thought he had a flop on his hands. The studio gave him a tiny budget, the special effects were brand new and unproven, and previews tested poorly. So convinced it would tank, Lucas skipped the premiere to take a vacation in Hawaii with Steven Spielberg. By the time he flew back, lines stretched around theaters in every city in America and 'May the Force be with you' had entered the language forever. The original release didn't even include 'Episode IV: A New Hope' in the title. That was added later when the film was re-released.
